Honest Comparison

Kit vs Ashby: Recruiting ops depth, or a role opened today.

Ashby gives a recruiting ops team a report builder, a LinkedIn sourcing extension and multi-day interview loops. Kit gives a founder a pipeline per role and a candidate portal nobody signs into.

Who should choose what?

Choose Kit if you're:

  • A startup with 5-50 people hiring your first 10 employees
  • Tired of software that ships with a manual
  • Driving the ATS from Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT over MCP
  • Want scheduling and the candidate portal in the seat price
  • Happy editing a pipeline template rather than designing one

Choose Ashby if you're:

  • High-growth company (100+ employees) with recruiting ops
  • Need advanced analytics and custom report building
  • Require 200+ integrations (HRIS, assessments, background checks)
  • Want CRM for proactive sourcing with email sequences
  • Have complex scheduling needs (Super Days, multi-day loops)
  • Need SOC 1 Type 2 compliance for enterprise sales

What makes Ashby special

Ashby is famous for three things: visual operations, deep analytics, and scheduling automation.

Visual Pipeline Operations

Ashby shows every open stage as a column, so a stall reads as a column that stopped moving. Drag a candidate across and that stage's automations fire.

Why this matters: When you're managing 50+ active roles, visual clarity prevents candidates from slipping through cracks.

Custom Report Builder

Ashby's report builder slices candidate data by any dimension, adds calculated fields, and drills into any chart. You write the question instead of picking one off a list.

Why this matters: Board decks need numbers nobody canned in advance. A recruiting lead can build one during the meeting.

Chrome Extension + CRM Workflow

Browse LinkedIn, click the extension, and the profile lands in Ashby with a duplicate check against everyone you have already contacted. Email sequences can send from your CEO's address.

Why this matters: Passive candidate sourcing is the bottleneck for senior roles. Ashby turns hours of copy-paste into seconds.

What Kit does well

Four things Kit does differently, starting with the person who has no login.

Your MCP client drives Kit

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Copilot connect to Kit over MCP. Every published tool is labelled read-only, destructive, or reaches a real person before it runs.

You can see which tool only reads and which one is about to email a candidate.

Candidates never make an account

A candidate clicks a magic link and lands in their portal. No password to set, no account to recover, no seat on your bill.

Security researchers and training participants get in the same way. Nobody outside your company shows up on the invoice.

Scheduling without a second tool

Candidates self-book from your team's real availability, and the Google Meet link is created with the slot. No Calendly or ModernLoop subscription.

The interview lands on the calendar with the room already attached.

A pipeline per role

A GitHub code assignment for engineers, a portfolio review for designers, a recorded answer for remote roles. Pipeline definitions are files you can version-control.

The pipeline you argued about last quarter is in a diff, not in someone's memory.

What Kit doesn't have

Five things Ashby does that Kit does not, and what we plan to do about each one.

Advanced CRM & Sourcing

Ashby has a Chrome extension for LinkedIn, automated email sequences, and deep talent pool management. Kit has a talent pool and resume field extraction, and no sourcing extension.

Will we add this? Partially. We'll add sourcing features but won't replicate Ashby's full CRM depth.

Custom Report Builder

Ashby lets you build SQL-like queries for any metric. Kit has pre-built analytics dashboards.

Will we add this? Unlikely. Kit's dashboards are fixed, and writing a query builder is not on the roadmap.

200+ Integrations

Ashby integrates with every HRIS (Workday, BambooHR, Rippling), assessment tool (CodeSignal, HackerRank), and background check provider. Kit builds its integrations in rather than brokering them, and has no HRIS, assessment, or background-check connectors at all.

Will we add this? Maybe. Core workflows come first, and we are in no hurry to grow an integration count.

Complex Scheduling Automation

Ashby handles Super Days, multi-day interview loops, and load balancing across interviewer pools. Kit handles basic scheduling and calendar sync.

Will we add this? Partially. We'll improve scheduling but won't match Ashby's enterprise-level complexity.

SOC 1 Type 2 Compliance

Ashby holds SOC 1 Type 2 (financial reporting) and SOC 2 Type 2 attestations. Kit holds neither today; SOC 2 is on our security roadmap.

Will we add this? SOC 2 is on our roadmap. SOC 1 is rare for startups and only critical when selling to Fortune 500 finance buyers — we'll add it if customers need it.

Philosophy differences

These tools reflect different worldviews about how hiring should work.

Kit: One interface

One interface, templates that ship with the product, built for a team that opens a role a few times a year. You are hiring 5-10 people a year, and the software should say so. No rollout plan, no configuration workshop, no consultant.

Ashby: Configurable by design

Replace entire recruiting stack, custom workflows, enterprise compliance, built for recruiting ops teams. Ashby believes that high-growth companies need extreme flexibility to handle scale. If you're hiring 100+ people a year, that configurability pays off.
