Honest Comparison

Kit vs Workable: One system for people ops, or one that ends at the offer.

Workable carries the record from applicant to employee, with a time clock and payroll prep at the far end. Kit stops at the offer and leaves the employee record to your HRIS.

Who should choose what?

Choose Kit if you're:

  • A startup of 5-50 people making 5-10 hires a year
  • Want a tool that ends at the signed offer
  • Don't need time clocks, payroll prep, or performance reviews
  • Want candidates reaching their portal without an account
  • Prefer one seat price over tiered plans with add-ons

Choose Workable if you're:

  • Mid-market company (50-200 employees) hiring regularly (20+ per year)
  • Need one system to replace both your ATS and your HRIS
  • Require employee management (time tracking, payroll prep, performance reviews)
  • Have dedicated HR generalist managing multiple HR workflows
  • Want 400M profile database for active sourcing
  • Need mobile time clock for hourly/field workers

What makes Workable special

Workable is famous for three things: sourcing reach, an ATS and HRIS in one record, and mid-market fit.

400M Profile Database + 200+ Job Boards

Workable carries a 400 million profile database you search with Boolean logic, in the same subscription. Every job you post also syndicates to 200+ boards, from Indeed and LinkedIn to niche boards and social.

Why this matters: A team with no sourcing budget can search names and publish a role in the same session, on one subscription.

ATS → HRIS Unified Employee Record

When you hire someone in Workable the candidate record becomes the employee profile, in place. The same system then runs onboarding, PTO, the time clock, performance reviews and payroll prep.

Why this matters: A 50-200 person company stops paying for two systems and stops reconciling the row that exists in both.

Mobile Time Clock & Field Workforce

Workable includes a mobile time clock with geolocation. Hourly or field employees clock in/out from their phones, and the system enforces that they're physically at the worksite. It tracks PTO accruals, generates payroll-ready reports, and manages attendance policies.

Why this matters: Retail, warehouse and field staff get clocked in from the same system that hired them, with no Homebase or Deputy subscription beside it.

What Kit does well

Four things Kit does differently, starting with the person who has no login.

Your MCP client drives Kit

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Copilot connect to Kit over MCP. Every published tool is labelled read-only, destructive, or reaches a real person before it runs.

You can see which tool only reads and which one is about to email a candidate.

Candidates never make an account

A candidate clicks a magic link and lands in their portal. No password to set, no account to recover, no seat on your bill.

Security researchers and training participants get in the same way. Nobody outside your company shows up on the invoice.

Scheduling without a second tool

Candidates self-book from your team's real availability, and the Google Meet link is created with the slot. No Calendly or ModernLoop subscription.

The interview lands on the calendar with the room already attached.

A pipeline per role

A GitHub code assignment for engineers, a portfolio review for designers, a recorded answer for remote roles. Pipeline definitions are files you can version-control.

The pipeline you argued about last quarter is in a diff, not in someone's memory.

What Kit doesn't have

Five things Workable does that Kit does not, and what we plan to do about each one.

Full HRIS

Workable holds employee records, time tracking, payroll prep, performance reviews and PTO. Kit stops at the signed offer and keeps no post-hire admin at all.

Will we add this? Unlikely. Kit is a hiring tool. Keep BambooHR or Rippling for the employee record.

200+ Job Board Syndication

Workable automatically syndicates jobs to 200+ job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, niche boards, social media). Kit has focused distribution to major boards.

Will we add this? Selectively. We prioritize quality channels over quantity. Most startups don't need 200 boards.

400M Profile Sourcing Database

Workable has a built-in 400 million profile database (like LinkedIn Recruiter) for active sourcing with Boolean search. Kit has basic talent pool and resume extraction.

Will we add this? Partially. We'll improve sourcing but won't build a 400M profile database. Use LinkedIn for active sourcing.

Tiered Premium Add-Ons

Workable sells premium features as add-ons (Video Interviews +$99/mo, Texting +$79/mo) or bundles them into the Premier tier. Kit has one seat price with no feature tiers.

Will we add this? N/A. One seat price and no tiers. VDP, Outreach and Compensation are separate products, billed separately.

Mobile Time Clock & Attendance

Workable has geofenced mobile time clock for hourly workers, PTO accrual tracking, and attendance reporting. Kit has none of this.

Will we add this? No. This is HRIS functionality outside our hiring focus.

Philosophy differences

These tools reflect different worldviews about how hiring should work.

Kit: Job post to signed offer

Kit covers the distance from the job post to the signed offer and then hands over. No time clock, no payroll prep, no employee record. Your HRIS already does that part, and it does it better than a hiring tool would.

Workable: One record, candidate to employee

Workable believes a mid-market company should run people operations from one system. Recruiting and core HR share a record, so the candidate becomes the employee without an export in between. If you manage 100+ employees and need HR admin, that unification earns its keep.

Pricing reality check

Kit

$8/seat, no feature tiers

  • Hiring and security training in the seat price
  • Unlimited job postings and applications
  • Scheduling and Google Meet links included
  • MCP tools for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Copilot
  • Magic-link portal, no candidate seats

Workable

$149-599/month base + add-ons

Starter: ~$149/mo | Standard: ~$299/mo | Premier: ~$599/mo

  • Tiered plans (Starter/Standard/Premier)
  • Add-ons for video/texting/assessments
  • Bundle in Premier
  • HRIS features in all plans

Pricing reality check

Workable prices by employee count and feature set, from $149 to $599 a month plus add-ons. Kit is $8 a seat with no feature tiers, and VDP, Outreach and Compensation bill on top. If you would otherwise buy an ATS and an HRIS, Workable's bundle may still come out level.

Switching from Workable?

You'll love Kit if:

  • Only need hiring, and already run BambooHR, Rippling or Gusto
  • Paying for HR admin screens nobody on your team opens
  • A team of 5-50 people opening a role a few times a year
  • Want your own assistant driving the pipeline over MCP

Stay with Workable if:

  • Rely on integrated time tracking and payroll prep features
  • Use the 400M profile database for active sourcing weekly
  • Need mobile time clock for hourly/field workers
  • Have 100+ employees and need the employee record too
  • Already consolidated ATS + HRIS workflows in Workable

Data portability: Workable exports candidate and employee data to CSV. Kit imports the candidate half, and your HRIS keeps the rest.
